About Families in Action
Families in Action is a non-profit, community-based organization in South Omaha. Its goal is to help women and families come together to promote health, well being, and knowledge and to be role models for the community. It was founded in 1997 as Interfaith Health Services by Rev. Dr. Damon Laaker.
Recognition: United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Award for Innovation in Health Prevention and Promotion— Nebraska and Iowa Community Partner Award
Our programs include: Academic support, Art programs, Exercise programs, Mental Wellness, Sewing, Sporting Programs, Youth mentoring, and other services based on identified and documented needs of participants themselves
Our partners include: Local nonprofits, businesses, elementary schools, universities, colleges, health providers, churches and community organizations
Our volunteers include: students from Creighton University, Nebraska Methodist College, The University of Nebraska Omaha, The University of Nebraska Lincoln, South High School, Bryan High School, Central High School, Creighton Prep and Marian High School
Annual Budget: $165,000: a low overall budget is possible because In-Kind donations of programming spaces, office sites, technology, volunteers and internships which comprise approximately 50% of organization’s structure.
